Zamfir! Master of the pan flute. Awaken your soul. Not sold in stores.

I love this whimsical view of the product. Metaphors are used constantly in the design process as a way for us to bridge our understanding from the concrete to the abstract. A portal into your life and consciousness.

Heydar Aliyev Center

Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in Baku, Azerbaijan – a cultural centre with walls that create a continuing landscape with the surrounding plaza. The outside is just as stunning as in the interior which  hosts a variety of cultural programs, its design is a departure from the rigid and often monumental architecture of the former Soviet Union that is so prevalent in Baku, aspiring instead to express the sensibilities and diversity of Azeri culture.

Heraclitus, Fragments

Man, translations are so damned tricky. I was a little underwhelmed by this one—turns out, for a reason. (If somebody else has a translation they recommend, lemme know.)

The Story of Fridolin

Fridolin was a “Brasilian tree frog”

I bought him 1974 at the Zoo-Shop in Stuttgart (Wilhelma), because frogs in the Black Forest were too fat and ugly… As I asked for a “beautiful frog” the sales guy gave me a weird look, but when I explained it was for the logo of a design firm, he said  that people are getting crazier by the day.

Fridolin’s body length was about 1 ½ inches (40 mm) Funny enough, Fridolin also was kind of a Chameleon: at night he was white and when we put him on a bold X, his back picked up the pattern - very bionic though.

The photo session was tough on him, because he jumped into a wet towel with each flash. of 120 shots # 104 was the perfect one. This graph is a 5-time reduction with low-ISO B/W Film and the rest is done by hand… the left eye is all drawing…

Fridolin lived for another 7 years in a nice terrarium which we maintained the German Way - always in order, cleaned and partial fresh water added once a week, plus a flie catching machine with a dock into the terrarium. During Winter time we had to catch the flies in warm cow stables, which also brought a certain odor to our studio…

Our clients loved the guy and brought him gifts - live flies in a jar!

The only drawback: during mating seasons, he got restless and was quite loud (smile)

- Hartmut

PS: FRIEDOLIN is the “Americanization” of his name - so it still sounds right.

20 years ago, in the night between the 26th and 27th of May, the city of Florence was subjected to a terrorist attack: a bomb was placed in Via dei Georgofili, right behind the Uffizi Gallery. Its explosion caused the death of five people and injured almost fifty.

Damages were produced also inside the museum: three paintings were destroyed and almost 200 works of art were ruined.

These photos were taken the morning after the explosion and show the effect of the bomb and the first restorers who rushed over.
