Fridolin was a “Brasilian tree frog”
I bought him 1974 at the Zoo-Shop in Stuttgart (Wilhelma), because frogs in the Black Forest were too fat and ugly… As I asked for a “beautiful frog” the sales guy gave me a weird look, but when I explained it was for the logo of a design firm, he said that people are getting crazier by the day.
Fridolin’s body length was about 1 ½ inches (40 mm) Funny enough, Fridolin also was kind of a Chameleon: at night he was white and when we put him on a bold X, his back picked up the pattern - very bionic though.
The photo session was tough on him, because he jumped into a wet towel with each flash. of 120 shots # 104 was the perfect one. This graph is a 5-time reduction with low-ISO B/W Film and the rest is done by hand… the left eye is all drawing…
Fridolin lived for another 7 years in a nice terrarium which we maintained the German Way - always in order, cleaned and partial fresh water added once a week, plus a flie catching machine with a dock into the terrarium. During Winter time we had to catch the flies in warm cow stables, which also brought a certain odor to our studio…
Our clients loved the guy and brought him gifts - live flies in a jar!
The only drawback: during mating seasons, he got restless and was quite loud
PS: FRIEDOLIN is the “Americanization” of his name - so it still sounds right.
